Risk of listeriosis with smoked salmon: product recall throughout France

Be very careful if you have purchased smoked salmon for end-of-year meals. The SAS Le Fumoir brand is the subject a recall of some of its products. The listeria bacteria which causes listeriosis is present in certain pieces.

The salmon concerned has been sold since December 5 in a one kilo format. Its expiration date is January 1st. The lot concerned is 11.173.011. The affected product was sold by wholesalers. It is therefore distributed throughout France.

If purchased, do not eat this smoked salmon, destroy it or return it to the store. In this case, an exchange will be made.

Up to eight weeks of incubation

The authorities indicate that people “who have a fever, isolated or accompanied by headache, and body aches, are invited to consult their doctor and report this consumption”. Particular attention should be paid to the fact that incubation can last eight weeks. Listeriosis can cause “serious neurological complications”.

As is often the case with this type of food bacteria, pregnant women, the elderly and those who are immunocompromised are most at risk. The Ministry of Health explains that “in the particular case of contamination of pregnant women, the infection may go unnoticed or be reduced to symptoms similar to those of the flu. However, the risks and consequences can be serious for the unborn child: abortion, premature birth, septicemic forms with respiratory distress in the infant in the days following birth.
