Rispoli, forests protect citizens from hydrogeological instability – Science and Technology

(ANSA) – TRIESTE, 10 OCTOBER – “Today forests are a model of sustainable development: through the forest we defend the territory and through this we guarantee the safety of citizens against hydrogeological instability. Forests allow us to experience the territory also from an economic point of view, of a sustainable, circular economy”. This was said by the Commander of the Forestry, Environmental and Agri-food Unit of the Carabinieri General CA Andrea Rispoli, speaking at the meeting “From the forest to the main tree” held today in Porto Vecchio as part of the Barcolana 56.
“The Army has acquired the inventory of forests, the ‘green jewels’ of the country, and, using technology, we would like its update to go from ten-yearly to annual”, hoped Rispoli, pointing out that “the inventory summarizes the state of health of forests”. But we must not think of forests only as a distant place: “The majority of the world’s population in 2050, 2060, will live in large urban conurbations, it is therefore important to create ‘large lungs of greenery’ within these conurbations.”
The forest “has gone from a valuable instrument” – because the wood was used to build ships and fortifications – to a “capital, which must be managed because it is fundamental for the defense of the territory, such as rain, for the economic valorisation of the territory , of which it avoids the impoverishment”, indicated the Commander of the Carabinieri Forestry unit.
