Road closure due to work on the Enrique Tejada Wyld bridge in Villa Nueva
The Road Conservation Execution Unit —COVIAL— has announced that next November 4th the maintenance and repair work on the Enrique Tejada Wyld bridgelocated in the kilometer 15.5 of the CA-9 South, route to the Pacificin it municipality of Villa Nueva.
The project will focus on repairing the structure’s expansion joints, an essential component in allowing the bridge to withstand the movements and stresses of daily traffic without compromising its integrity. The work will begin on Monday, November 4 at 6:00 am and will be carried out in one lane at a time, which will allow keeping at least one road enabled for vehicular passage. This measure seeks to reduce interruptions in vehicular flow at this strategic point that connects CA-9 South with the municipal seat of Villa Nueva.
It is estimated that the intervention will last approximately seven days, concluding on Sunday, November 10 at 11:00 am, at which time both lanes will be enabled. During the time the work lasts, agents from the Villa Nueva Municipal Traffic Police, as well as personnel from the General Directorate of Road Protection and Safety – Provial – will be on site to control and facilitate vehicle flow.
Previous improvements on this bridge in Villa Nueva
In August 2022 and for at least seven months, until February 2024, the Enrique Tejada Wyld Bridge underwent reinforcement work to improve its structure and load capacity, as well as to prolong its useful life. In this intervention, piles were installed under the footings, a process that aimed to improve their resistance. Inspections carried out in June of that year indicated that the bridge did not present serious damage, although signs of natural wear were found, such as concrete chips in secondary elements, minor problems in the expansion joints and some points of corrosion in the steel plates. at the seismic tops.
Importance of maintenance in road infrastructure
The maintenance of a bridge is essential to ensure its safety, functionality and durability. These structures support constant and heavy loads, such as the passage of vehicles and the effect of environmental factors, such as rain, wind, temperature changes, among others, which is why they require periodic monitoring and care. Without this maintenance, bridges can develop faults that affect their stability and safety, increasing the risk of accidents and, in serious cases, structural collapse.
Expansion joints, in particular, are key components in a bridge’s infrastructure. These joints allow it to expand and contract with changes in temperature without structural damage. The materials with which they are constructed tend to expand with heat and contract with cold. If expansion spaces are not left, cracks or deformations may develop that, over time, compromise its stability.
Additionally, expansion joints absorb movement generated by traffic, wind and vibrations, distributing these forces in a controlled manner to prevent damage to other parts of the bridge. Over time, seals become worn or damaged, preventing them from functioning properly. If they are not repaired or replaced in time, you run the risk of unnecessary stress, accelerated wear on other parts, or even the fracture of some structural components.
