Karan Johar’s much-anticipated film, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh in the lead roles, made its theatrical debut on Friday. While the film’s opening day collection was substantial, it fell short of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”

According to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” amassed an impressive Rs 11.5 crore from Indian theatres on its first day. However, it was outperformed by Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which opened with Rs 14.5 crore in India. Despite this, it ranks as the fifth-highest opener for a Hindi film in 2023, as per Bollywood Hungama.

The morning shows of “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” witnessed a 12% occupancy in the Hindi market. However, the film saw a consistent increase in percentages throughout the day, with 15.80% for afternoon shows, 20.18% for evening shows, and an impressive 36.85% for night shows.

“Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” faces little competition in the Hindi film market, with Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” losing buzz in India. The film aims to capitalize on this advantage, especially while competing with “Oppenheimer.”

Despite its box office performance, the film has received mixed reviews. Shubhra Gupta from The Indian Express mentioned in her review that the film delivers “ginormous sets, blingy naach-gaana, and a lot of emotions, but little originality.”

Apart from the dynamic duo of Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, the film features an ensemble cast including Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Aamir Bashir, Tota Roy Choudhury, Churni Ganguly, Kshitee Jog, and Anjali Anand in pivotal roles.

“Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” carries the hopes of Karan Johar and Bollywood to deliver a blockbuster hit. While it may have fallen short on its opening day compared to “Oppenheimer,” the film’s performance over the coming days will be crucial in determining its success at the box office.
