With the presence of artists, curators and art researchers, the exhibition “Mauricio Valiente, Unveiling the Arcanes” was opened, with works by this multifaceted and unknown artist from Santa Ana, who dabbled in all the techniques of plastic arts.
In the act held on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, in the newly built Zelié Lardé Room of the Museum of Word and Image (MUPI), Alfredo Milián, Ricardo Castrorrivas and Edgardo Quijano spoke, who referred to the esoteric vision contained in this exhibition that consists of 22 pieces, in Chinese ink and color, representing the Major Arcana of the Tarot, two sculptures and a large-format charcoal work. Much of his pictorial work was in a collection at the time of his death and passed from family custody to private collectors, to later be protected by Pandora Gallery.
Despite having produced hundreds of works in oil, drawings, engravings, and sculpture, Valiente does not figure in the records of Salvadoran painters of the 20th century. The reason for this omission is that Mauricio Valiente, an exponent of psycho-painting, painted mostly for himself and not with the desire to exhibit. Since then, he forced Valiente to dismantle his work and canceled the exhibition scheduled at the National Exhibition Hall.
A complete exhibition of Mauricio Valiente is scheduled for September 21 at the “Sala Nacional de Exposiciones Salarrué”, the same day his show was censored in 1979.
