The Energomash Research and Production Association has completed the manufacture of the RD-171MV liquid-propellant rocket engine for the first flight tests of the new Soyuz-5 launch vehicle. About it reported at the state corporation Roscosmos.

The work was completed in June. In 2023, the enterprise intends to complete the assembly of the engine for the second flight rocket, as well as to produce the engine for the third one.

“The next stages of the program will be interdepartmental tests of the RD-171MV and the serial supply of engines for Soyuz-5 rockets,” the state corporation added.

Roskosmos emphasized that the engine had passed more than two dozen fire tests. Also, two RD-171MV, designed for finishing and final finishing tests, were defective.

In the state corporation, the new engine is designated as “the most powerful in the world.” Roskosmos announced the completion of fire tests of the engine in August 2022. The thrust of the new engine is 800 tons. The RD-171MV engine itself is a modernized version of the Russian RD-171M engine, which was developed back in 2001. Medium-class launch vehicle Soyuz-5 was named Irtysh, its developer is RSC Energia. Rockets will be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome as part of a joint project with Kazakhstan.
