INTERVIEW – The Oxford University researcher is conducting trials on a revolutionary injection aimed at preventing the appearance of the most common and deadliest malignant tumor: that of the lung.

One in two people will develop cancer during their lifetime, warns oncologist Sarah Blagden of the University of Oxford. The same probability as when flipping a coin. However, for Sarah Blagden, malignant tumors are not inevitable. The researcher is leading a revolutionary project, which is trying to develop the first preventive vaccine against lung cancer, the most common and deadliest worldwide, with nearly two million deaths per year. The initial goal is that the injection, called LungVax, will prevent the tumor from appearing in an upcoming trial of 600 high-risk smokers or ex-smokers.

Sarah Blagden compares cancer to another disease considered inexorable for centuries: tuberculosis, which can now be largely prevented thanks to a childhood vaccine.
