Luis Rubialesrecently temporarily suspended as president of the royal Spanish Federation of football (RFEF) and as vice-president of the UEFA has been forced by justice to double the alimony he pays his ex-wife for the three daughters they have in common after a “substantial increase” of their income. This is what the Tenth Section of the Provincial Court of Valencia has determined in a judgment of the past 19 June to which EL PERIÓDICO D’ESPANYA has had access and in which it is detailed, based on the income declarations of Rubiales himself, the income it has had over the past decade.

In this way, and as can be seen from the data contained in this documentation, the still president of the RFEF would have gone from entering 97.237 euros as net returns from their work in 2011 a 955.079 euros in 2020, when he had already been in office for two and a half years. This year it earned more than double what it did in 2019 and more than quadruple what it did in 2018.

This one multiplication by ten of their income on account of the work would have motivated his ex-partner, from whom he divorced in 2013, to ask for a review of the alimony he receives for the daughters they have in common. When his request was rejected by Rubiales himself in court, the updated pension would have been practically half of what the mother was asking for and double what the father had been paying until now. This newspaper has tried to request the version of Luis Rubiales through the RFEF, but the body has not wanted to make statements since it is no longer part of the federation.

The magistrates justify their decision to increase the pension by “the sharp increase in remuneration” of Rubiales a situation that must have its reflection, the judges conclude, “in the amount of alimony, and not only, as the judgment has decided [del 9 de maig de 2022 pel Jutjat de Primera Instància número 6 de Llíria]in the full payment by the appellant of the extraordinary expenses”.

The sentence of the Provincial Court of Valencia to which EL PERIÓDICO D’ESPANYA has had access does not, therefore, accept the arguments of the defense of Rubiales, who refused to increase the payments intended for his daughters by temporary nature of the positions which he holds as president of the Spanish Football Federation, and as vice-president of UEFA”, since he has detected a “sustained increase over time, and growing in his income”.

In fact, say the magistrates, “in the event that their remuneration also decreases in a lasting and significant manner, it may be of interest to reduce their alimony contribution for their daughters”, a situation that can occur if it reaches to confirm the definitive departure of the presidency of the RFEF and the vice-presidency of UEFA following the Jenni Hermoso case. Faced with the sentence, Rubiales could file a cassation appeal.

1.6 million in revenue

Based on the documentation provided by Rubiales’ defense, the president entered more than 1.6 million euros as net income from work between 2018 and 2020. His fixed salary, but especially his total income, has been a mystery since he took office in the summer of 2018 , when he promised a revolution and more transparency compared to the model of his predecessor, Ángel María Villar. As soon as he took office, however, Rubiales was given a fixed salary of 160,000 gross euros per year plus a variable of 0.6% of income from sponsorships.

In his income statement, the recently inaugurated president declared that he had received net income from work of 231,700 euros this year. The income, far from remaining stable in these amounts, doubled year after year as Rubiales expanded his power in Spain and also in Europe.

In mid-2019, Luis Rubiales was unanimously elected by members of UEFA’s Executive Committee as the organization’s new vice-president, a position he held until FIFA’s recent suspension following the Jenni case Beautiful . In return, and as it has transpired, the president received 250,000 gross euros per year.

To this half a year’s salary it would be necessary to add the 160,000 euros of his fixed salary as president of the RFEF, so that, in gross terms, he would have contributed around 285,000 euros gross plus variables. According to your income statement for this financial year 2019 Rubiales declared to have entered as net income from work 458.655 euros .

The big change, however, came in 2020, the year of the pandemic, when the president declared that he had won 955.078 eurosthat is to say, more than double than in 2019 and more than quadruple than in 2018, the year in which he began to preside over the Real Spanish Football Federation from May.

Revenue from Saudi Arabia

In 2020, after closing the operation to bring the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia, for which the RFEF is pocketing 40 million euros per year, Rubiales proposed to the assembly a new modification of the remunerations. The variable part was no longer linked to sponsorships to be linked to the total income of the Federation, thus incorporating into the account millionaire agreements such as those achieved with the Saudi dictatorship.

Specifically, Rubiales kept 0.15% of the RFEF’s total income, discounting those from public subsidies. In 2022, after the controversy raised by the publication of his audios and private conversations, he proposed a new change, consolidating as a fixed salary the one collected the previous year with the formula then in force, 635,000 euros. This is the amount he continued to receive until he was suspended by FIFA, apart from his remuneration as UEFA vice-president.
