Russia is ready to meet with its Arctic Council partners during the summit. Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Nikolai Korchunov, chairman of the committee of senior officials in the Arctic Council, suggested holding a meeting of the council, if other countries support such an initiative.

“The Russian Federation, as the country’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council, will be ready to organize such a meeting if supported by all partners,” he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Earlier, speaking at the ministerial session of the Arctic Council in Reykjavik, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Moscow was ready to organize this summit during its chairmanship.

Mr. Korchunov also stated that Moscow’s military activity in the Arctic does not pose a security threat to other states. He said that the restoration of infrastructure is being carried out to ensure the country’s defense capability.

The Arctic Council, which was established in 1996, includes Denmark, Iceland, Canada, Norway, Russia, the USA, Finland and Sweden.
