Russia strikes Europe’s largest nuclear power plant

by time news

As Russia’s offensive in Ukraine continues for a ninth day, Russia’s attack on the Saporosia nuclear power plant in the southern Ukrainian city of Enerhodor has caused great tension across Europe.

Russia, which has been waging war on Ukraine for the past 24 days, has been launching missile and warplane attacks on Ukraine’s airports, ports and military bases. Russia has also reportedly destroyed more than 100 Ukrainian military logistics structures. Meanwhile, Russian forces launched a direct attack on the Saborosia nuclear power plant in the southern Ukrainian city of Enerhodor this morning. Russia’s attack on what is believed to be Europe’s largest nuclear power plant caused a fire at one of the six nuclear reactors.

Ukrainian troops put out the blaze after heavy fighting in the area, where heavy smoke billowed from the site. Two Ukrainian soldiers were reportedly killed during the Russian offensive. If there was a nuclear accident at the Saporosia nuclear reactor, which supplies 25 percent of Ukraine’s electricity, it would have affected the whole of Europe, and its impact would have been many times greater than the damage at the Chernobyl nuclear accident.

Speaking on the occasion, Ukrainian President Zhelensky said, “The Kremlin’s attempt to acquire a huge nuclear plant is the worst terrorism the world has ever seen. Similarly, the US embassy in Ukraine has stated that “attacking a nuclear reactor is a war crime.” At the same time, Russia has taken control of the reactor.
