Sahra Wagenknecht calls for an end to German solidarity with Israel’s government

The BSW boss criticizes the Israeli government – and also makes serious accusations against the federal government.

Party founder Sahra Wagenknecht calls for an end to Germany‘s solidarity with the Israeli government. “If you supply weapons, you make yourself partly responsible for war crimes,” said the chairwoman of the alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) in Berlin. “The actions of Netanyahu’s troops are clearly completely inconsiderate towards the civilian population, and now even towards UN soldiers. And I think that’s where solidarity stops or has to stop.”

The BSW supports Israel‘s right to self-defense, but not the current military action, added Wagenknecht. The federal government is acting like a driven person without stopping war crimes – “they are even involved in them,” said Wagenknecht.

Because of the Israeli shelling of soldiers from the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon (Unifil), SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich had previously called for the Israeli ambassador to be summoned. “I expect the federal government to inform the Israeli ambassador about our position,” said Mützenich in Berlin on Tuesday. He could therefore “well imagine if the federal government summoned the Israeli ambassador to the Foreign Office on this issue.”

Mützenich described the shelling of international troops, which also included German soldiers, by a democratic state as “unacceptable”. The SPD politician emphasized: “This is an event that I could not have imagined.”

As can be seen from answers from the Federal Ministry of Economics to inquiries from BSW Bundestag member Sevim Dağdelen, the federal government did not approve any exports of military weapons to Israel between March and August 21st. However, the federal government has emphasized that there is no arms export boycott against Israel.
