TVs from popular Korean brands Samsung and LG were caught spying on users. This was reported by the NewScientist publication, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.
According to media journalists, TV models can take screenshots of screens when consumers connect them to their computers and consoles. Manufacturers use this data to customize the display of relevant advertisements.
Expert Yash Vekaria from the University of California at Davis (USA) said that users do not even assume that all their actions are being recorded. It is reported that some Samsung TVs take screenshots every 500 milliseconds, LG – 10 milliseconds.
During the study, experts connected televisions to a device that analyzes network traffic. It turned out that the devices start recording as soon as a TV antenna or HDMI cable is connected to the TV. However, no recording is made when online cinema applications are running.
The material states that private information that the consumer would not want to share with others may appear on the screens of Samsung and LG devices. The authors noted that surveillance can be disabled through the settings, but there are no universal instructions – this happens in different ways on different equipment.
