Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong made it clear on the 7th that he was not interested in spinning off the foundry (semiconductor consignment production).

According to the industry, Chairman Lee met with a foreign reporter during an economic mission visit to the Philippines and said, “We want to grow the (system semiconductor, including foundry) business. “I am not interested in a spin-off,” he said.

Samsung Electronics began its non-memory business in earnest by launching its foundry business as an independent division in 2017, but the possibility of a spin-off is being raised due to the recent industry downturn.

However, Chairman Lee dismissed the possibility of a spin-off. It is known that this is the first time that Chairman Lee has officially expressed his position on the spin-off of the foundry business.

A business official said, “This is interpreted as showing Samsung Electronics’ confidence in semiconductors and strong business will in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).”

Samsung Electronics’ foundry division is likely to lose money this year due to Taiwan’s TSMC’s market dominance and fierce market competition.

Chairman Lee previously announced the ‘System Semiconductor Vision 2030’ in 2019 and presented the goal of investing 133 trillion won by 2030 in the system semiconductor field, including foundry, to become the number one system semiconductor company by 2030.

Samsung Electronics will begin mass production of its second-generation 3-nano process in the second half of this year, and is working hard to secure performance and yield.

In addition, the company received an order from Japan’s Preferred Networks (PFN) for a 2-nano-based AI accelerator, a next-generation process, in a ‘turnkey’ manner. Through this, the company is seeking to catch up with TSMC by leveraging its strengths as a comprehensive semiconductor company with foundry, memory, and package capabilities.

Regarding the Taylor factory in Texas, USA, Chairman Lee said, “It was a little difficult due to the changing situation,” but did not say anything more.
