After the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 both Western giants withdrew from Russia, Mir became one of only a few card systems operating in the country.

“From 2024 April 3 Mir cards will no longer be able to be added and used on the Samsung Pay platform, according to a statement published on Samsung’s website.

The company did not explain the reasons for such a decision and was not in a hurry to respond to AFP’s request for comment.

Samsung has become the third tech giant to remove Mir cards from its digital wallet in 2022. Apple and Google have also cut ties with these cards.

The decision comes a month after the United States Treasury announced sanctions against Russia’s National Payment Card System, the central bank-owned entity that oversees the Mir cards.

Outside of Russia, these cards can be used to pay in only a few post-Soviet and South American and Asian countries, although the Kremlin explains that the number of such countries is increasing.

After the West introduced sanctions, in 2022 some Turkish banks stopped serving this card, causing problems for Russians on vacation in this tourist-friendly country.
