Indian cricketer Sanju Samson speaks out about his struggles to get a permanent place in the national team
Thiruvananthapuram: Despite achieving more in cricket than he thought, Indian cricketer Sanju Samson has opened up about his struggles to secure a permanent place in the national team.
Currently, the young Indian team led by Suryakumar Yadav is playing a five-match T20I series against Australia. Sanju Samson, who made his debut in the Indian team in 2015, has been trying to secure a permanent place in the team.
Having been the captain of a team in IPL matches and demonstrating exceptional form in recent years, Samson has been looking to cement his position in the Indian team. However, opportunities have been limited for the talented cricketer.
Despite being part of the Indian team in series like the Asia Cup, Samson was often a reserve player. His hopes of featuring at number four in the World Cup were dashed as KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer were unable to make it due to injury.
Even in the current T20I series against Australia, with senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli rested, Samson has not been given the opportunity to play, leaving many to label him as an “unlucky player.”
Addressing the criticism, Samson stated, “People call me an unlucky cricketer. It’s not like that. I have achieved more in cricket than I thought. The place I have reached now is bigger than I thought.”
Speaking about the support he has received, Samson revealed, “I think Rohit Sharma was the first or second person who came to me and said, ‘You are playing well in the IPL. But you hit too many sixes against Mumbai. He is the only person who often tells me that I am playing well.'”
Despite the setbacks, Samson remains optimistic and determined to prove his worth in the Indian team. His perseverance and dedication to the sport continue to inspire many aspiring cricketers.
