A German company based in Munich, Lilium, will provide planes for direct routes along the Red Sea coast and carry pilgrims from Jeddah to Mecca, which has no airport, Saudia communications manager Razan Shaker said.
“Our strategy is to help connect sites and cities that do not have airports or are difficult to reach,” Razan said as reported by AFP.
“This plan includes taking the pilgrims to the landmark, the Fairmont Mecca Government Clock Tower, near the Grand Mosque where we are working on the construction of the helipad,” he said.
Last July, Saudi Arabia announced that the company would purchase 50 Lilium vertical takeoff aircraft with an option to purchase another 50 aircraft.
Saudi Arabia is expected to start receiving the jets in 2026. The Lilium electric aircraft can carry four to six passengers and fly at a speed of 175 kilometers per hour.
