Scientists claim to have discovered a new superfood, reported the electronic edition “Uricalert”.

Specialists from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, are of the opinion that the fruits of the sea buckthorn bush, also known as sea buckthorn, is a rich source of natural antioxidants in North America.

The study, led by Prof. Fereydoun Shahidi, shows the unique nutritional profile of sea buckthorn fruit grown in Canada.

It is a plant that is found along the coast of northwestern Europe, as well as in the temperate regions of Central Asia. Its fruits and leaves are widely used for their nutritional, pharmaceutical and functional properties – the oil of the plant is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins E, B and A and polyphenols.

The study results highlight the presence of key polyphenolic compounds in sea buckthorn fruit and seeds, each with potential health benefits ranging from cardiovascular protection to anti-inflammatory properties.

According to the researchers, geographical factors influence the polyphenolic profile of sea buckthorn fruit, with the scientists identifying several individual compounds with increased bioactivity that are only found in the sea buckthorn variety grown in Newfoundland.

In addition, sea buckthorn extracts demonstrate antidiabetic and antiobesity potential. According to the researchers, this paves the way for further study of their mechanisms and potential therapeutic applications, writes BTA.

The results of this study pave the way for the use of sea buckthorn berries as a valuable source of natural antioxidants in North America. As consumer interest in functional foods and nutritionists continues to grow, this plant is emerging as a sustainable and health-promoting option.

The study data is published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.
