Scientists have revealed the survival rate of patients with severe COVID-19

Scientists from Spain and Canada have found that the level of specific antibodies against the coronavirus spike protein affects the survival rate of patients with severe coronavirus, RIA Novosti reported citing the results of the study. These antibodies are formed during vaccination. Specific antibodies against the viral spike protein block its replication.

The authors of the study selected the results of analyzes of 92 adult patients who were admitted to hospitals in Madrid in March-April last year. The diagnosis in all patients was confirmed by a PCR test, and a blood test was taken from them on the first day of their hospital stay.

The researchers found that a low antibody response against the coronavirus spike protein directly correlates with a high risk of death. “Our results confirm that treatment with exogenous antibodies for COVID-19 should be personalized, and such therapy should only be used for patients with absent or low levels of endogenous antibodies,” said one of the study authors, MD from the Institute for Biomedical Research in Salamanca. Jesus Bermejo-Martin.

Earlier, the Moscow headquarters for the fight against coronavirus reported that new drugs from the group of monoclonal virus-neutralizing antibodies began to be used in city hospitals. Such drugs are used all over the world to treat patients at an early stage of the development of coronavirus. First of all, such therapy is recommended for pregnant women with coronavirus who are at risk of a severe course of the disease.
