Approved for the installation and maintenance plan of the Hanseong Normal School site, etc.
We also plan to establish two March 1st Movement demonstration sites in Gangnam.
It has been revealed that the Seoul Metropolitan Government is pursuing the installation of a marker at the site of Hanseong Normal School, Korea’s first teacher training school that was closed during the Japanese colonial period.
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 19th, the ‘Site Installation and Maintenance Plan for Hanseong Normal School Site, etc.’ was recently approved at the 3rd meeting of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s National Heritage Committee of the National Heritage Committee.
The city has been installing markers since 1985 to remember and commemorate the sites of lost cultural heritage and historical events. Currently, about 340 markers are installed throughout downtown Seoul.
Regarding the installation of a marker at the site of Hanseong Normal School, the city said, “Given that the establishment of a normal school is the beginning of teacher training and education in our country, there is sufficient historical, socio-cultural value to install a marker.”
Hanseong Normal School is the first normal school in Korea established in 1984 to train teachers for elementary schools, elementary schools. In 1985, when the ‘Hansung Normal School Control’ was enacted, the name was changed to ‘Hansung Normal School’.
It was established in accordance with the purpose of the Joseon government to spread elementary schools nationwide, but after national sovereignty was taken away by Japan in 1910, it was closed in 1911 when the ‘Joseon Education Ordinance’ for education in Japan’s colonies was announced.
The new marker will be installed at the current location of Gyodong Elementary School in Gyeongun-dong, Jongno-gu, where Hanseong Normal School was located. Gyodong Elementary School was an elementary school affiliated with Hanseong Normal School at the time. The type of marker was planned to be floor-type and installed on the sidewalk in front of the school gate.
Meanwhile, the installation of markers is also being promoted at two March 1st Movement demonstration sites. The target locations are two locations: ‘Daewang-myeon March 1st Movement demonstration site (currently around Yulhyeon-dong, Gangnam)’ and ‘Yeoksam-ri March 1st Movement demonstration site (currently around Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam).’
The explanation is that both places have sufficient historical value to install markers as demonstration sites for the independence movement that resisted colonial exploitation and expressed their will for independence. The places where the marker will be installed are Bangjukso Park in Yulhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, and the Yeoksam 1-dong Community Center.
The city published the relevant information in the Seoul Times in accordance with the ‘Guidelines for New Stone Construction and Maintenance’. After a period of listening to opinions, the location of the marker and the text will be finalized and the project will be implemented.
