The 16-year-old student at the Atheneu Sergipense Center of Excellence, Rafael Gama, was one of the ten Brazilians selected to participate in the largest simulation of the United Nations (UN), in the United States, the Harvard Model United Nations (HMUN). He is the state’s only representative and ranked fourth.
In these simulations, each student must represent a country and defend it in hypothetical conflicts. In the role of heads of state, young people develop their pedagogical skills and their public policy knowledge to claim important issues and deal with intricate political scenarios.
According to Yuri Norberto, the young man’s teacher and tutor, the selection process to be part of this program is carried out by qualified institutions within each partner country, following guidelines such as social engagement and participation in other simulations.
Rafael was well prepared as a member of Politize!’s ambassador program, an educational network that aims to encourage student participation in politicsand ambassador of the Full Secondary Education project, which promotes good practices on the subject.
In addition, he is the founder of the Atheneu International News Observatory, a digital literacy project for students who wish to become future educators.
The young man participates in Atheneu ONU, the biggest simulation of a United Nations General Assembly in Brazil and Latin America, a program created at his school by the students themselves after being inspired by the dynamics of the UN.
Among the main factors that contributed to his placement, Rafael cites the full high school. “I needed to develop essays in which I could discuss the themes of human rights and quality education, which we strongly address with our teachers and in projects at school. I used critical thinking, which was also highly encouraged during classes, in addition to relying on my experience with the Ateneu ONU project”, he continued.
The trip should take place in January 2024 and will be financed by the Brazilian Youth Academy (BYA), the institution responsible for mediating the process between the UN and the student.
