Better climate policy is needed to prevent further environmental catastrophes.
As far as the goal is concerned, all parties in the Bundestag agree – except for the AfD: Germany should become climate-neutral by 2045. But on the way there, politics has maneuvered itself into a dead end.
The chaos surrounding the Building Energy Act (GEG) shows: A climate policy that relies on technical specifications and bans that are as precise as possible and is then also communicated clumsily cannot be communicated to the citizen and puts the political system under stress that threatens its very existence.
On the other hand, a climate policy that no longer creates its own setbacks through a lack of acceptance would have to be characterized by the following features.
1. Dare more pragmatism
Green hydrogen is expected to become the elixir of life for climate-neutral industrialized countries. So there is a lot to be said for promoting the development of a hydrogen value chain in Europe instead of torpedoing it.
But anyone who wants to produce hydrogen that is classified as climate-neutral in Europe must adhere to strict rules.
