The Municipality of Guatemala and Volunteer Firefighters reported on December 31 about several fires that were recorded on the last day of 2023, and in the early hours of 2024. No deaths were reported in any incident.
It’s news. A fire broke out in the facilities of the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGGS) in zone 5, with economic losses of around one and a half million quetzales, according to the preliminary report.
Of a batch of approximately 70 motorcycles, 30 of them were consumed by flames and others suffered partial damage. The Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident at 35 Avenue and 23 A Street, Colonia Arrivillaga, zone 5 of Guatemala City, where the flames originated. To put out the fire, the relief body reported that around 5,800 gallons of water were used.

On the radar. Another institution that suffered an incident with the flames was the National Civil Police (PNC) a few minutes before the end of 2023, at the facility located on 5th Avenue and 9th Street in Zone 4 of the capital.
This was the second fire reported during the night of December 31. Amílcar Montejo, spokesperson for the Municipal Traffic Police (PMT), reported that several vehicles suffered damage, although the extent and possible causes are unknown so far. The presence of the PMT was needed to divert vehicles and attend to several pedestrians.

Data. Even in the Capital City, another incident was reported with flames in zone 21, specifically at the República de Venezuela Official School for Girls #27.
According to emergency services, the fire originated in the kitchen of the facility, so they worked to put out the flames. No victims were reported.
Data (II). Meanwhile, in the interior of the Republic two fires were reported: One in Huehuetenango and Quetzaltenango.
A sale of fireworks in San Antonio Huista, Huehutenango was consumed by flames and left 11 people intoxicated by smoke inhalation and burns on the body. In addition, damage to vehicles and motorcycles that were near the scene. In Quetzaltenango, a fire completely consumed a home, where two minors were treated for smoke inhalation. None of the incidents spread to neighboring homes or establishments.
