Bulgarian professional boxing star Kubrat Pulev said he hopes to fight Germany’s Mahmud Char for the World Boxing Association’s “regular” world heavyweight title as early as the fall, but that depends on many side factors.
Pulev said this after the training held at the Serdika ancient complex in the center of Sofia, which was also attended by his rival Ihor Shevadzutsky. The Ukrainian urgently had to replace Char after the German suffered an injury and will not be able to take part in the boxing gala evening scheduled for Saturday, March 30 in “Arena Sofia”.
“This event is a press training. Unfortunately, professional boxing in Bulgaria is not at such a level, but such training is a practice before similar matches everywhere in the world. We chose this place (Largoto) because it is emblematic and historical. Many televisions broadcast this thing on the world and we wanted to present Bulgaria in the best possible way. We have such a great history that should be displayed and be proud of it. We could have chosen any mall, but this place is very real, very important for Bulgarians. No only we shouldn’t forget our ancestors and our history, but we should be proud of it. It’s very beautiful here and it’s done with quality,” Pulev told the media.
“My opponent Ihor Shevadzutsky is by no means worse than Mahmud Char. His style is similar, if not the same. Tough boy, he comes here to win. He had a match a month ago, he is prepared. The change of opponent does not bother me made it difficult because it happened at the very end of my preparation. However, we were ready and managed to react very quickly. Congratulations to my team. I think there will be very serious fights. There will be many good matches at this gala, it will be classy and beautiful,” added the two-time contender for the world title.
“I don’t want to speak for Char if there will be a future match between us, but for now that’s the deal. You’ll have a chance to ask him in person though. He wants to come and watch me live, maybe he’ll be here even tomorrow for the press conference. In sports and in boxing, especially at heavyweight, injuries like this happen. How many times have I been injured before a match. Every professional athlete is in such danger. For now, a match between me and Char is fixed for September, but we’ll see if it will be then. I’m also doing the impossible for this match to be in Bulgaria. I don’t want to comment on details, but whoever believes me, let them believe me,” concluded Kubrat Pulev.
