The annual number of Merkel cell carcinoma cases in the United States is approximately 3,000. However, this number has been steadily increasing due to advancements in detection methods and longer lifespans. Survival rates depend on the stage and location of the cancer, with stage one having a five-year survival rate of 75%, stage two at 61%, and stage three at 24%. Survival rates are higher when the tumor is on the arms or legs compared to the head or neck.

Regular skin examinations can help identify any unusual growths, and a biopsy may be conducted to confirm the presence of cancer cells.
