Title: SKY 11 Warns Public to Beware of Diarrhea, Urges Adherence to Food Safety Principles

The Disease Prevention and Control Office 11 in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province is cautioning the public, especially school-age children, to be vigilant against diarrhea. The office has advised people to consume freshly cooked food, clean and safe water, and ice that carries standard certification marks. This recommendation is part of an effort to adhere to the principles of “eat cooked, hot, clean” in order to prevent food and water-borne illnesses.

Dr. Kraisorn Tothapthiang, Director of the Disease Prevention and Control Office 11, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, emphasized the need for vigilance, particularly at this time when schools are back in session. With students gathering in groups for activities, there is an increased risk of food and water contamination, which can lead to various illnesses.

During a period of humid and cool weather, various germs, including norovirus and rotavirus, can thrive, causing severe diarrhea, especially in young children and the elderly. The Disease Prevention and Control Office 11 reported a total of 41,835 cases of acute diarrhea from January 1 to November 5, 2023, with the most affected age groups being 0-4 years, 5-9 years, and 15-24 years.

Phuket Province has the highest rate of illness per 100,000 people, with a trend of increasing sickness rates every year.

Diarrhea is a disease transmitted through contaminated food and water and can be prevalent in any season. Symptoms include stomach pain, loose diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Initial treatment is recommended through the consumption of oral rehydration solution (ORS) to prevent dehydration, and individuals with severe symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention.

The office emphasized the importance of adhering to the principle of “eat cooked, hot, and clean.” This includes the consumption of freshly cooked food, thorough handwashing with soap and water, and choosing drinking water and ice with standard certification marks or drinking boiled water.
