After the end of Assad’s rule, Syrians want to return to their homeland. But there are also many Syrians in Germany who are very well integrated and work, says Minister Faeser.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) is not in favor of all Syrian refugees leaving their home country. There are many Syrians in Germany who work and are very well integrated – “why shouldn’t they stay with us?” she told ZDF on the sidelines of a visit to London. There is a shortage of work and skilled workers in Germany. “So it would be nice if some of the Syrians could stay with us.”
There are certainly people who want to return after the end of President Bashar al-Assad’s rule to help rebuild their country. Whether and when it would be safe to return remains to be seen, she added.
Faeser, who took part in a discussion in the British capital about combating smuggling gangs, said: “It’s good that Assad is gone, but we don’t yet see which forces will take over there, how democratic they will be, how much protection is granted to the people there at all.”
On Monday, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) decided not to decide on asylum applications from people from Syria for the time being due to the dynamic development of the situation in the country.
