BOLZANO. New record for South Tyrolean exports, exports to the USA “fly”. In the 3rd quarter of 2024, South Tyrolean exports recorded a value of 1.87 billion euros (+4.3% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2023). Increases in flows towards Germany (+7.1%) and “boom” towards the United States (+42.2%). So that in the first nine months of the year, Alto Adige sold goods worth 5.6 billion euros abroad, another record compared to the 5 billion in the same period of 2023.
«In light of the complex geopolitical situation, the arduous economic situation in Germany – our main market – and the crisis in the automotive sector, we were very concerned about the performance of local exports in recent months and even expected a slight decline. However, even in these complex times, our companies have managed to expand their presence on global markets”, underlines the president of Confindustria Alto Adige, Heiner Oberrauch.
Who then adds: «The US data in particular is proof of companies capable of innovating not only their products but also their markets. In any case, the general economic situation is and remains very complicated.” However, the data also confirms that exports are driven by innovative products wiht high added value such as electrical appliances, leaders in South Tyrolean exports with over one billion euros in the first nine months.
«The result certifies the great ability of our companies, thanks to investments and the high productivity of collaborators, to remain competitive on world markets», continues the president of Confindustria Alto Adige. For Oberrauch, the positive trend in exports, notably in a complex global geopolitical and economic context, must therefore be supported even more.

«Measures are needed,at European,Italian and provincial level,which allow South Tyrolean companies to strengthen their competitiveness to continue to be present on global markets. Export guarantees the enduring growth of businesses and of our entire province. Companies that are strong in exports can actually guarantee high-quality jobs, investments in the area, fundamental tax revenues to finance public services and welfare, and, thus, the well-being of the whole of Alto Adige”, highlights the entrepreneur.
According to Astat data, the European countries to which most exports are carried out remain Germany (30.5% of total exports), Austria (11.8%) and France (6.4%). Almost half of all exports (48.7%) flow into these nations. Outside of Europe, the largest share of exports is directed towards America (11.3%) and Asia (7.1%). over two thirds of the goods destined for the American continent are directed towards the United States which, with 8.6% of total exports, represents the third largest outlet market for South Tyrolean goods. Exports to EU states amount to 70.1% of the total and rise by 1.9% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2023. The value of Germany, the most important market for South Tyrolean exports, rises by 7.1%; Austria, the second most critically important market, recorded a slight decrease of 1.9%.
Among the ten largest outlet markets, the greatest increases are those towards Denmark, with exports almost doubling (+73.3%),Slovakia (+11.3%), the Czech Republic (+8.8%) and France (+8.5%), while the Netherlands (-38.0%) and Belgium (-4.4%) recorded a negative sign.

The largest export share is attributable to electrical appliances with 18.1% of the total, followed by other machinery and appliances (18.0%), food, beverage and tobacco products (16.3%) and base metals. and metal products, excluding machinery and systems with 14.5%. This is followed by agricultural, forestry and fishing products (8.2%) and means of transport (7.1%).

E: That’s fascinating! Though, you also noted the geopolitical complexities and economic troubles in Germany. How are these factors influencing South Tyrol’s export landscape?
HO: The geopolitical situation, coupled with the challenging economic climate in Germany — our primary export market — presented meaningful concerns for us. Initially, we anticipated a potential decline in exports. However,even in the face of these hurdles,our companies have demonstrated resilience and adaptability,which has allowed them to find new opportunities and expand their presence globally.
E: It’s encouraging to hear how local businesses are overcoming challenges. How do you see the future of exports for South Tyrol, especially with regards to the U.S. market?
HO: Looking ahead, I am optimistic. The U.S. market continues to represent significant potential for growth, especially as American consumers increasingly seek high-quality and innovative products. However, we must remain agile and responsive to market trends and consumer behaviors. Continued investment in research and progress will be crucial for sustaining this momentum.
E: Speaking of investment, what support structures are in place for South Tyrolean companies that wish to expand their exports, particularly to the U.S.?
