The City Hall of São Paulo claims to have provided 56,232 services to women victims of violence between January and October this year. The number is equivalent to an average of 185 assistance services provided per day in the capital of São Paulo.

Of the total number of appointments, more than half (23,387) were provided at the Casa da Mulher Brasileira, located in the Cambuci neighborhood, in the central region of the capital. Next comes the Casa da Mulher Maria de Lourdes Rodrigues Reference Center, in Capão Redondo, in the south zone, with 4,755.

The mobile unit, the so-called Lilac Bus, which travels to different locations and events in the city, carried out 3,905 receptions. And the three outposts (located at the Sacomã bus terminal and the Santa Cecília and Luz Metro stations), together, made 218.

The survey was carried out by the Municipal Department of Human Rights and Citizenship. The head of the department, Soninha Francine, tells the column that there has been a change in the way of counting the number of women seeking services.

Those who preferred to remain anonymous, until then, were not accounted for in the balance sheets. “The woman could be attended to without saying her name, but this was not registered as assistance”, the secretary further states. “If we compare the total [de atendimentos] 2023 and the previous year, we will compare very different things.”

Francine says more women sought the services of the folder and that there were fewer cases in which the victim received initial care, but then never returned. “It’s a reflection of improvement in work, and not just that the general situation of violence has worsened,” she says.

Furthermore, Francine says that there has been a change in behavior: more women seek help before the violence situation has reached advanced stages.

Currently, the department pays a monthly rental aid of R$400 to 1,441 victims of domestic violence. Francine believes that the measure is important to give women autonomy. “Instead of going to a shelter, for example, she has more freedom of choice. She can go live with a friend and continue working.”

Next year, the department will open two new service points, according to the secretary. One of them will be next to the Vila Nova Cachoeirinha hospital, in the north zone, which last month suspended the carrying out of pregnancy termination in the cases provided for by law. The other will be in São Miguel Paulista.

In addition, there are plans to open a center, called “Control F”, to assist families of missing people.
