Steinmeier honors Löw – “Team reflects the diversity of our society”
Joachim Löw was heavily criticized after two unsuccessful tournaments in a row. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is now praising the former national coach. He also sees Löw responsible for social success.
GA great honor for Joachim Löw: Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD) thanked the former national soccer coach for the services of the former national soccer coach in the form of an honorary dinner at Bellevue Palace on Wednesday lunchtime. The meal was scheduled in a small group in the Robert-Blum-Saal. And Steinmeier found very special words.
“You have given the people of this country many moments that will remain in the memory of our nation,” he said in his dinner speech. “With your resignation after the European Championship in England, a great era has come to an end. In fifteen years as national coach and two years as assistant coach of the national team, you have achieved something historic for German football. You have made a contribution to the cohesion of our society and the reputation of our country in the world. “
Steinmeier continues: “Today we are honoring one of the most successful coaches in the national team, who enjoys high recognition worldwide. Joachim Löw has coached the German team at three world championships and four European championships – and reached the semi-finals three times and the final twice. He led his players to the world championship title in 2014 and to winning the Confederation Cup in 2017. As a world champion maker, he stands in a row with Sepp Herberger, Helmut Schön and Franz Beckenbauer. “
He described Löw as “an innovator and visionary who has brought German football back to the top of the world.” Steinmeier also said: “It is thanks to you, dear Joachim Löw, that the national team soon no longer distinguished itself through struggle and discipline, but also through tactical and technical sophistication, through light-footedness and joy of playing, through fast, courageous attack football that has inspired millions of people. “
Löw was a national coach, “whose team reflected the diversity of our society. The successes of his team have changed the self-image of our country, they have made different stories of origin of young Germans an integral part of our national narrative. And above all, they have shown how much we as different people can achieve together when we are there for one another. “
The debate about Mesut Özil had also shown “that painful conflicts can arise in our diverse society that are not always easy to resolve – not simply with the players concerned, but also not simply in a public that is constantly nervous and hungry for headlines especially when opinionated sections of this public already make their judgment before efforts to defuse the conflict can be successful. “
DFB also says goodbye to Löw
The German Football Association (DFB) will say goodbye to Löw next week in Wolfsburg ahead of the national team’s World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein.
Steinmeier concluded his speech by recalling the 2014 World Cup: “The memories of such moments are precious, for every single football fan, but also for our society as a whole. And you, dear Joachim Löw, we owe these moments very much to you. That is why I say today: “Cheers to you!” All the best and many thanks! “
