Humans, not glaciers, were responsible for transporting the massive stones of Stonehenge across Great Britain to their current location in southern England, a new study definitively confirms.

For decades, scientists have debated how the iconic stones of the 5,000-year-old monument-some originating as far away as Wales and even Scotland-made their way to Salisbury Plain. The prevailing “glacial transport theory” suggested ice sheets delivered the bluestones and the massive 6.6-ton Altar Stone. But that idea is now facing serious challenges.

Published Jan. 21 in the journal Communications Earth and Environment, the latest analysis of microscopic mineral grains from rivers surrounding Stonehenge reveals that glaciers didn’t extend into the region during the last ice age (2.6 million to 11,700 years ago). This finding effectively refutes the glacial transport theory.

“While previous research has suggested human transport, this study provides compelling evidence against the glacial theory,” explains led author Dr. Andrew Clarke of the University of Sheffield. “The mineral composition of the rivers around Stonehenge doesn’t match the source regions in Wales or Scotland.”
The researchers analyzed over 700 zircon and apatite grains and found no significant matches for rocks in Wales or Scotland.
Instead, most of the zircon grains dated between 1.7 billion and 1.1 billion years ago, a period when much of southern england was covered in compacted sand. Apatite grains,on the othre hand,dated to around 60 million years ago,when the region was a shallow,subtropical sea.This indicates the minerals in the rivers around Stonehenge originate from local rocks,not those carried in by glaciers.
“This gives us further evidence the monument’s most exotic stones did not arrive by chance but were instead deliberately selected and transported,” the researchers concluded.
