‘Strict monitoring to ban polythene shopping bags from November 1’

Environment advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that the government will strengthen the campaign along with strict monitoring to ban polythene shopping bags from November 1.

He said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the special meeting in the meeting room of the Jute and Textile Ministry of the Secretariat on Sunday (October 27).

Syeda Rizwana Hasan said, strict monitoring will be done to stop the use of polythene shopping bags from November 1. Polythene producers will also be raided. Only polythene shopping bags are being discontinued. Any supershop supplying polythene shopping bags will face legal action.

The meeting discussed the implementation of the Compulsory Use of Jute Wrapping in Products Act, 2010 and encouraging people to use jute bags instead of polythene.

The advisor said, if people stop using polythene, production will also stop. People should be made aware for this. Action will be taken if anyone is willfully negligent.

He also said that people should understand the harmful effects of polythene bags and take steps to avoid them.

At the meeting Brigadier General (retd.) Advisor to Ministry of Textiles and Jute and Ministry of Shipping. M Sakhawat Hossain said that the use of jute bags should be increased. Necessary steps will be taken to ensure adequate supply of jute bags. Export of raw jute will be stopped if necessary.

Secretary of Ministry of Textiles and Jute was also present at the meeting. Abdur Rauf, Director General of Jute Directorate Zeenat Ara and representatives of various business organizations.
