Tiruppur: Despite the opposition of other parties except the DMK, the resolution to increase the property tax was passed in the corporation yesterday. An emergency meeting was held in the corporation yesterday evening to raise the property tax as per the government order. Corporation Mayor Dinesh Kumar presided. Deputy Mayor Balasubramaniam and Commissioner Kranthi Kumar presided.
Mayor Dinesh Kumar spoke on the resolution: Tirupur Corporation electricity bill, 45.96 crore rupees. 122.27 crore for other sectors. 327.05 crore debt to be repaid. The provident fund owes Rs 3.67 crore and the pension benefit is Rs 75 lakh with a total debt of Rs 499.70 crore.
Costs, including staff salaries, are rising as the city grows and population grows. Accordingly, the property tax hike is mandatory. Thus, the mayor spoke. The resolution should be debated and acted upon only by Councilor vote. This tax hike should be repealed. Is highly reprehensible.
Gunasekara (BJP): It is reprehensible for the state government to impose this tax hike on the people, blaming the central government. The federal government must show proof that it is forced to raise taxes. Senthilkumar (Cong.): The committee set up in 2018 raised the tax. But, then reduced.
Nothing can be done without raising taxes. However, after the current abnormality is rectified, the tax can be reduced by consulting with the Audit Committee and then deciding. The intervention of the state government is a false precedent. We strongly condemn this act of undermining the democracy of the local body. The tax hike should be withdrawn.
The intervention of the state government is an act of usurpation of power in the assembly. Fatima Daslin (IUML): The tax hike is not the right end. Many have rented their own house though. This will place a greater burden on a crisis such as rising prices. The government, which is concerned about the welfare of the people, should revise the tax, the councilors said.
Tirupur Corporation is currently in ICU. Only bitter medicine can cure diseases. There is no other way. Development work should be done.- Govindaraj (DMK,) says there is no central government funding. The state government has no funds. In this situation local bodies stumble without funds.
