President Yoon Seok-yeol, who received an arrest warrant on charges of being the leader of the rebellion related to the 12/3 martial law incident, announced that he plans to submit a written opinion to the Seoul Western District Court. Previously, the High-ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Office (Corruption Investigation Office) requested an arrest warrant for President Yoon from the Western District Court.

President Yoon’s lawyer Yoon Gap-geun said in a press notice that day, “We plan to submit an opinion on the request for an arrest warrant to the Western District Court between 1:30 and 2 p.m. today.” It is known that a report on the appointment of a lawyer will also be submitted.

The Corruption Investigation Office requested an arrest warrant from the Western District Court at midnight on this day when President Yoon, who had been requested to appear three times on charges of insurrection, failed to appear until the previous day. This is the first time in constitutional history that an arrest warrant has been requested for a sitting president.

President Yoon’s side has argued that the Corruption Investigation Office does not have the authority to investigate treason crimes. However, the Corruption Investigation Office’s position is that an investigation is possible because President Yoon’s charges of rebellion are related crimes that were recognized during the investigation into the alleged abuse of power.
