Switzerland withdraws into itself

Switzerland, one of the richest countries in the world, is preparing to reduce its development aid budget to compensate for higher spending on the military. The symbolism is devastating: we are reducing our aid to fight poverty to buy F-35 fighter jets in the United States. Unfortunately this decision, if confirmed in the Federal Associations, is a sign of a country that has refocused on itself in recent years and refuses to accept its responsibilities as a prosperous country that has duties towards the world.

Don’t get me wrong. I am of the opinion that Switzerland must fully assume her obligations to protect her. Our military must be modernized quickly. Since the end of the Cold War, Switzerland has taken advantage of the “peace dividend” and its position in the center of Europe to reduce the budget of the Federal Department of Defense. It is therefore appropriate the least increase it to 1% of GDP and include this approach in a rapprochement with our European neighbors to seriously contribute to the defense of our sovereignty.
