Vienna. A Syrian man (20) living in Vienna was sentenced to 12 months conditional imprisonment by the Vienna District Court on Monday for blackmail, on the grounds that he threatened two women with publishing their naked photos at Christmas last year in order to relieve his income difficulties.
Allegedly, the Syrian young man, who wanted to earn more money, used an anonymous fake account and told his girlfriend that he had nude photos of himself and that he would publish them if she did not pay 2,000 euros or have sex with him. The young woman, who did not know that her boyfriend was behind the profile blackmailing her, went to a meeting arranged to deliver the money in Wilhelminenberg in Ottakring on December 25, 2023. However, he could only collect half of the requested amount. The 20-year-old young man, who accompanied his girlfriend “as a hero”, organized two friends in advance to collect the money on her behalf. They both wore Halloween masks to prevent the young woman from recognizing the children. During the meeting, the 20-year-old young man hid in the bushes and watched the money being delivered. When the masked men grabbed the euros, the man ran after them and pretended to try to get the money back.
The young girl learned about the plans only after the second blackmail
The 20-year-old Syrian tried again to get money this way on January 4, this time blackmailing an acquaintance, but he did not get involved and went directly to the police. Investigators soon realized that the defendant was behind this plan, and so his girlfriend – the two are now separated – learned that the young man was also responsible for blackmailing her.
“This was a mistake. “I did it without much thought,” said the young Syrian, arguing that he had already apologized to the young women and compensated for the damage he had caused. However, his ex-girlfriend reported that his money has not been refunded yet. Thereupon, the court ruled that the amount of money taken through blackmail be paid back to the woman. It was also decided that the 20-year-old young man had to benefit from probation assistance.
Acquittal verdict for fight in front of bar
It was learned that the Syrian young man was acquitted of the case in which he was tried on charges of assault following a fight he got into with his friends on March 24. Allegedly, while his friends were arguing with two men outside a bar in Hernals, he punched one of the men, causing his nose to bleed. The Syrian, who admitted to being at the scene, claimed that he kicked only once to defend himself. The Syrian was acquitted after the victim could not clearly identify the 20-year-old attacker.
