PS Saroja is a native of Salem district of Tamil Nadu. He was born in 1929 in Thiruvananthapuram. When she was a little girl, her family moved from Thiruvananthapuram to Rayapetta, Chennai. A violinist father and a singer mother have nurtured many talents in their daughter.
In this, PS Saroja, who learned singing from her mother, sang Telugu kirtans at an early age. Due to his childhood interest in circus, he did not go to school and turned his attention to the Tamilnadu circus camp near the school, and the coach of that circus gave him circus training.
After the circus company eventually shut down, PS Saroja got an opportunity to work at Gemini Studios with the help of a Congress leader. PS Saroja started her cinematic journey as a dancer in the film Madanakamarajan released in 1942 and went on to dance in a few films including Mangamma Sapadam and Burma Rani.
She made her debut as an actress in 1946 with the film Vikadayogi starring PU Chinnappa, DR Ramachandran and DR Rajakumari. After that, PS Saroja, who acted in many films like Deva Manokari, Geethanjali, Parijatham, Pichaikari, Vazha Nawanval, got an opportunity in the 1954 film Goondukli.
Directed by DR Ramanna, this film was co-produced by him and his sister and actress DR Rajakumari. Written by Vidhagan Kathi, this film is one of the most important films in the history of Tamil cinema and MGR. It also has the distinction of being the only film with Shivaji.
There are two friends named Thangaraj (MGR) and Jeeva (Shivaji). In this Thangaraj gets married to a woman named Mangala (PS Saroja). At the same time Thangaraj accepts the crime committed by Jiva and goes to jail. Jeeva tries to help her to reach Mangala who is thus helpless.
But Jeeva engages in activities to harass Mangala who refuses to accept help. But Mangala refuses at one point to agree to Jiva’s wish, and as Jiva approaches Mangala, he is suddenly struck by lightning and loses his eyesight. Thangaraj, who is constantly in jail, protects his wife. This is the story of Goondukkali.
After this film, M.G.R. Both Sivaji acted separately in many films, but Goondukgli was the first and last film they acted together. Today is the birthday of the actress PS Saroja, who made history with them in this film.
