2022 is shaping up to be a great year for Tamil cinema even though filmmakers and theater owners are not increasing their income as much as they used to after the corona pandemic. Even though OD has become a major form of entertainment during the Corona period, the number of fans coming to the theater remains regular.
However, last year’s hits like Vikram, Ponni’s Selvan 1, and Tiruchirampalaam proved that the theater business was not a loss. A continuation of last year’s success can be expected in 2023 as well. Also, there are promising films that could make 2023 a good year for fans and filmmakers alike.
Successor, January 12
As Vijay releases his first film of the current year in the first month of 2023 this is a much needed start for Tamil cinema. Directed by Vamsi Baidipalli, Vaarisu is slated to release during the Pongal holiday season. Vijay has acted in a full-time family film after many years. This film will definitely be a big treat for family fans.
Tunivu, January 12
Another film releasing for Pongal this year is Ajith’s Thadvu. After a gap of eight years, the release of Vijay Ajith’s films as two leading actors of Tamil cinema on the same day has created great anticipation among the fans. Ponni’s Selvan 2, April 28
Mani Ratnam’s historical film Ponniin Selvan 1 is the biggest hit of 2022. The 2nd part of the film is slated to release on April 28. It remains to be seen whether this film will beat the collection of the first part. Starring Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai and Karthi, the film is based on the novel Ponniil Selvan by Amarar Kalki Krishnamurthy.

Kamal Haasan has proved his personality once again with 2022’s Vikram. Vikram collected around Rs 400 crores at the box office. In 2023, he has another action film Indian 2 releasing. Indian 2 is being prepared as a sequel to the 1996 film Indian. While the first part revolves around the warrior Senapati and his son, the second part will take things backwards and narrate the story of Senapati and his father.
Alien
This is one of the long-running films in Tamil cinema. Starring Sivakarthikeyan, the film is expected to be a science thriller and on the lines of Aamir Khan’s PK. Director R Ravikumar, who made his debut with the time-travel film Yesterday Today Today (2015), has been working on this film for the past seven years. Hopefully the wait will pay off
Jailer
Superstar Rajinikanth did not release any film last year, but currently he is acting in Jailer directed by Nelson Dileep Kumar. Rajinikanth is expected to fill the gap from last year with this film. The story is said to be about a police warden trying to stop prisoners from escaping. Ramya Krishnan, Kannada actor Shivraj Kumar, Vasanth Ravi and Vinayakan are playing the lead roles in the film. The film is an important milestone in Nelson’s career as his last film Vijay’s Beast did not go well, forcing the director to prove his mettle with Jailer.
Commander 67
What will Lokesh Kanagaraj do this time? Will he surpass Vikram? Is the film part of Vikram? There are a lot of questions surrounding this yet-to-be-titled film, but the makers are tight-lipped about anything. It has been officially confirmed that Gautham Vasudev Menon will star in the film, while other details remain under wraps. While all the other films in the list are big-budget ventures, Vetri Maran’s Vithuthya is different. The film, which is based on a short story by Jayamohan, Upapanvan, features comedian Suri as a police constable. Gautham Vasudev Menon and Vijay Sethupathi also played the main characters. All of Vetimaaran’s films were screenplays adapted from books and became hits, the last being Asuran (based on Bhoomani’s Vekkai) which won National Awards (Best Actor and Best Film for Dhanush). Naturally, there is great anticipation for another adaptation of the hit.
Captain Miller
We all know what Dhanush did in Tiruchirappalam last year. When it was thought that only big-budget action films would play in theatres, actor-director Mithran Jawahar proved that a family film with an innocent and vulnerable hero can bring people to the theaters in large numbers.
