Targeting delayed insolvency and subsidy fraud

GERMANY. Alfons Schuhbeck (75), who is currently serving a prison sentence for tax evasion, is facing serious new allegations. The public prosecutor’s office in Munich I has now charged the famous chef with delaying bankruptcy and subsidy fraud, as reported by German media.

According to the investigation, Schuhbeck did not file for bankruptcy for nine of his companies, even though they were already insolvent. He is also charged with nine counts of fraud and attempted fraud, as well as 19 counts of subsidy fraud. The 124-page indictment refers in particular to the period of the corona pandemic, during which, according to the allegations, Schuhbeck illegally received about half a million euros in state aid.

About 50 accounts were reviewed as a result of the extensive investigation, launched by a unit specializing in economic crime at the end of 2021. Schuhbeck has been in prison since August 2023 and is serving a sentence of three years and two months. Meanwhile, he enjoyed respites in the open prison system, including monthly releases and short stays at home. But with the new investigations he has to say goodbye to these advantages as well.
