New Musical “Jon Virgin” Seeks Lead Actor for December Workshop in New York City
Table of Contents
A developmental workshop for the new musical “Jon Virgin” will be held in New York City this December, seeking a tenor actor/singer to embody the titular role. The workshop, running from December 7th to December 12th, 2025, will focus exclusively on the musical aspects of the production, foregoing a customary staged reading.
The musical centers on jon Virgin,a character who, after being ridiculed as “Round John Virgin” in his youth, steals a plastic baby from a nativity scene. This act sets off a fantastical odyssey following an intervention by the Angel Soji, transporting Jon to another realm after an altercation with varsity football players.
According to the show creator, Gregory Paxton, “Jon Virgin” is designed as an allegory for contemporary society. The story intertwines Jon’s personal journey of reconciling with his past with a reimagining of the virgin birth narrative. Paxton draws parallels to groundbreaking musicals like “Godspell” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” noting that “Jon Virgin’s” spirited music and storytelling – steeped in magical realism – aims to challenge political and religious dogma.
The workshop will consist of six rehearsals and workshops, held daily from 10 am to 3 pm at Ripley-Grier Studios in New York City (520 8th Ave.). The final day, December 12th, will be dedicated to a full run-through of the material in front of a small creative team.
Seeking a Versatile Tenor
The role of Jon Virgin requires a tenor with a vocal style reminiscent of Matthew James Thomas in the 2013 production of “pippin,” combined with the depth and richness of a young Luis Miguel. The production is seeking an actor comfortable with pop, folk, and indie-rock styles, as well as lyrical ballads.

Participants will receive a $500 stipend for the six days of workshops (totaling 29 hours) and an additional $120 stipend to cover commute and travel expenses. The total compensation equates to approximately $620 per week.
