HDMI 2.2 was presented at the CES in Las Vegas. The new transmission standard comes with more bandwidth and requires a new cable.

Higher resolutions and refresh rates: HDMI 2.2 should enable both. The new transmission standard for audio and video signals was officially presented at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. Consumers will soon need a new cable.

According to a statement from the HDMI Licensing Administrator organization responsible for the interface, HDMI 2.2 offers a bandwidth of 96 gigabits per second (Gbit/s). This corresponds to twice the data throughput compared to its predecessor HDMI 2.1, which guaranteed 48 Gbit/s.

HDMI 2.2’s high bandwidth “provides improvements in data-intensive immersive and virtual applications such as AR/VR/MR, spatial reality and light field displays,” the release said. The standard aims to take into account the “rapidly changing landscape of incredible new technologies and products”.

There are five so-called HDMI classes:

For HDMI 2.2, a new cable called Ultra96 is required that supports a bandwidth of 96 GBit/s. However, it will probably take some time until devices that use the new standard come onto the market.

In the past, it took around three years between the presentation of a new standard and the release of suitable graphics cards. It will take even longer for televisions and other entertainment media such as game consoles to use the HDMI 2.2 standard. HDMI 2.2 is scheduled to be introduced in the first half of 2025.
