6 years after the death of Ya’qub Abu al-Qiyaan in Umm al Hiran, his family members are now demanding the establishment of a state commission of inquiry to look into the affair. This was reported this evening (Tuesday) on News 12.

The family said that “Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and MK Moshe Saada, who used our son to accuse the top police and the prosecutor’s office of causing injustice to our family and covering up the investigation, must act to correct this injustice.”

The Minister of Justice ordered an investigation into the Umm Al Hiran case

As you may recall, al-Qiyaan was shot dead in January 2017 during the evacuation of the village of Umm al Hiran, when policemen shot him after suspecting him to be a terrorist trying to run them over. Police Commissioner at the time Roni Elshich and Minister of Internal Security Gilad Erdan were quick to determine after the incident that it was an attack – but in May 2018 the then State Attorney Shai Nitzan closed the case against the police officers who were in the incident, claiming that “there is no reasonable suspicion of criminal offenses committed by the police officers”.
