Experts from XDA explained why there are more computer viruses for Windows than for other operating systems (OS). Media authors named three reasons for this phenomenon, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.
According to journalists, Windows-based computers are statistically more susceptible to malware than devices running other operating systems. This is primarily due to the software architecture – Microsoft OS requires confirmation only when running some programs, while many run with administrator rights by default. In comparison, Linux and macOS applications run in a sandbox and cannot gain advanced permissions without the user’s knowledge.
The second reason for the abundant distribution of viruses for Microsoft’s OS is due to the fact that the Windows audience is more predictable: “hackers are looking for users who do not understand how computers work.” Experts explained that usually professional users, who are more difficult to hack, choose Linux or macOS.
Experts named the third reason for the prevalence of Windows – the operating systems of this family are considered the most popular in the world. Therefore, it is more profitable and easier for hackers to create malicious programs for millions of computers at once.
