The Great Independence Day is today Tuesday (March 26). Every year on this day, millions of people flock to the National Memorial to pay their respects to the martyrs of the Liberation War. This time is no exception.
After the president and the prime minister paid their respects, the crowd started to flow when the memorial premises were opened. The courtyard became busy with the arrival of people of all ages, including children, boys and the elderly.
Various public and private, autonomous, semi-governmental, educational institutions and other institutions paid their respects to the martyrs at the national memorial with banners and festoons. Shaheed Bedi was filled with their floral tributes.
Many war dead freedom fighters have also come to pay their respects to celebrate Independence Day. Many of them had red-green victory flags in their hands.
Baby Maisha came to the memorial from Dhaka’s Dhamrai holding her father Saiful Islam’s hand. He was chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ in a half-spoken voice. Saiful Islam said, I brought the child to see the Independence Day and the memorial.
Akram Hesen, a private employee, came from Dhaka. He said, I left Dhaka early in the morning with my family. Many of my colleagues left soon after Sehri. It is great to be able to offer flowers with everyone at the memorial in the morning.
Eva, a student of Savar Public University, said, I had planned long ago to come to the National Memorial on the Great Independence Day. A few of us came to the memorial together. It is a pleasure to pay tribute to the best children of the nation on Independence Day.
Deputy Assistant Engineer of Public Works Department Mizanur Rahman said, after opening the memorial to the public in the morning, people are paying their respects in groups. The altar is slowly filling up with flowers of reverence. Flowers are being removed from the altar to facilitate the offering of respects.
Meanwhile, additional policemen have been deployed in the vicinity of the memorial for security reasons.
