Valentina Ponomareva, a participant in the Soviet cosmonaut training project, scientist, backup of the first female cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, died at the age of 90.
As reported in Roscosmos, farewell will take place on November 11 in the House of Cosmonauts of Star City, the funeral will be in the cemetery of the village of Leonikha.
In 1963, Ponomareva was trained under the program for the first female space flight on the Vostok-6 spacecraft. In addition to Tereshkova, Irina Solovyova and Zhanna Erkina trained in the group with her. Ponomareva eventually became the second backup.
In 1969, Ponomareva was expelled from the cosmonaut corps due to the disbandment of the women’s group.
