The tram network of the Barcelona metropolitan region has closed 2023 with demand data that surpasses a new record. During the last year, 30.9 million trips were made in 2023, 15.84 percent more than in 2022.

Of the 30,962,605 million trips that have been made throughout the network in the last year, 21,821,274 correspond to the Trambaix and another 9,141,331 to the Trambess. These figures represent a growth of 18.64 and 9.64 percent, respectively. These data also reflect that the figures return to pre-pandemic levels and reach a new record of validations, since the demand for 2019 has been exceeded by 1.2 million. Another of the marks that have been improved is that of validations in a single day On November 8, 122,502 trips were registered between the two networks.
Trajectory
Since operations began in 2004, 458,626,776 tram trips have been made. On the one hand, the Trambaix, with the three lines T1, T2 and T3 and its twenty-nine stops, has registered more than 312 million trips. On the other hand, the Trambess, also with three lines, T4, T5 and T6 and 27 stops, has exceeded 145 million trips.
The Trambaix entered service on April 3, 2004 and the Trambess did so on May 8 of the same year. Since its inauguration, the tram has been the best-rated public transport in the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona, according to the ATM’s Workday Mobility Survey. In addition, validations have grown, year after year, with the exception of 2010 and 2012, due to the economic crisis, and the years 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus.
