Liquidation of non-governmental organizations in Belarus

In April 2021, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei declared that civil society in Belarus may be destroyed in response to Western sanctions.

“Any further tightening of sanctions will cause the civil society they care about to cease to exist. And it will be, I believe, absolutely justified in this situation,” said Mackay.

July 22 Alexander Lukashenko announced the purge of non-governmental organizations.

“So both the government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ran after “democracy” and created something for us (let Mackey not take it to his account again, it was before him, he inherited it, now we need to loot it), and we received under 2 thousand on a small country of NGOs, NGOs, thugs and foreign agents. So what, did they get democracy?”

“The cleaning is going on. Do you think it’s easy? “Thousands of people are already working there, our people, and mostly with brainwashed brainwashed by other people’s money,” Lukashenka said.

On July 30, Lukashenka stated that “under the guise of charity, non-profit organizations are working on someone else’s political order.” He said that there were 1500 different non-governmental foundations, private institutions, and human rights organizations in Belarus.

“As a result of the conducted activities, 185 destructive structures that pose a potential threat to national security have been identified, including the representative office of a foreign non-profit organization, 71 republican and local public associations, and 113 institutions,” Lukashenko said at a meeting with officials.

Since the middle of July, there has been a mass liquidation of non-governmental organizations throughout the country. The existence of dozens of educational, human rights, charitable, consumer, research and other organizations is under threat. Representatives of institutions are detained, their homes and offices are searched, and their accounts are seized.

As of the end of 2021, the authorities have liquidated at least 275 NGOs, and a number more are in the process of liquidation or under threat of liquidation.

A year after the beginning of mass pressure, in July 2022, it became known that the authorities had liquidated or caused 857 non-governmental organizations to self-liquidate. And Lawtrend monitoring for the end of 2022 showed that in two years the public sector of Belarus got rid of at least 1102 non-profit organizations.

One of the main events was the liquidation of independent trade unions in the country. The leaders of the organizations were sentenced to long prison terms.
