PLANE – A detail that is not one. On January 6, a Boeing 737 MAX 9 a lost a door at 5000 meters altitude. If in the process, other airlines which use this model discovered poorly screwed bolts, many elements are missing to explain this terrifying accident. But the investigators stumble upon a major problem: the black box which reproduces the cockpit conversations recorded nothing, as you can see in our video above.

There are two types of black boxes on board each plane: one of them records flight data, and the other records noises in the cockpit. Collecting and then analyzing this data is essential for authorities investigating aircraft accidents. However, the agency that manages civil aviation in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), allows recorded cockpit conversations to be overwritten after two hours. Very often, investigators therefore do not have access to the necessary voice data.

In Europe, however, this recording time is 25 hours. Moreover, for years, the National Transportation Safety Board has been asking the FAA to increase the registration time for all American airliners. Except that as stated Forbes, the FAA estimates that the renovation, at around $742 million, is too expensive. Instead, it proposed last November to extend the registration period for new planes, a measure which should be implemented in early 2025.

To prevent the loss of black box data and facilitate accident investigations, other solutions have been proposed. Some propose installing cameras in the cockpit to support the voice recorder, or even dematerializing the black box so that it can transmit flight data live, explains the media AFAR. To see if the near tragedy of the Boeing 737 MAX 9 will push the FAA to change the standards of all American black boxes.
