Berlin – Fewer passengers, less income: Corona brought the Berlin public transport company (BVG) a serious crisis. Current figures now show that the challenges will continue in the second year of the pandemic. The number of passengers has exceeded the 80 percent mark for the first time since the outbreak of the virus disease, and the decline in the number of environmental card subscriptions has also stopped for the time being, as the state company announced. But the financial gap this year is likely to be even bigger than in 2020. It is expected that Corona will give BVG a gap of almost 230 million euros this year compared to the plan, which must be closed. The forecasts also show that the debt will continue to grow – due to high investments. At the end of the year, according to information from the Berliner Zeitung, the BVG could be in the chalk with over 1.3 billion euros.
