The CEC of Belarus announced the adoption of amendments to the constitution following a referendum

65.16% of voters voted for amendments to the constitution of Belarus, the country’s Central Election Commission reported. 10.07% opposed. The turnout was 78.63%, Interfax reports.

One question was submitted to the referendum: “Do you accept amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus?”. A referendum is considered valid if more than 50% of voters took part in it.

The draft of the new constitution was published at the end of 2021. According to the amendments, part of the president’s powers will be transferred to the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly, and the head of state will not be able to hold office for more than two terms.
