Like any other afternoon in Villa 31, the children and adolescents of the area went to the headquarters of the Scholas Occurrentes Foundation, founded by Pope Francis, to do the usual activities: share their daily lives, train and play soccer. What they did not know is that this day was going to be different, since they would have the visit of some very particular people: Emilio Gutierrez, director of the Academy of Atletico Madridand Román Rodríguez, director of the Foundation of the mattress club.
As strange as the situation may seem, his presence had a great reason: to help the boys who need it the most to continue their training with sport. The event also included José María del Corral, one of the founders of Scholas together with the Holy Father, who together made a very special announcement: the spanish team decided to sponsor the ‘Pelota de Trapo’ league program of the Foundation, which has to do with recovering the values of the meeting, the celebration, solidarity and the game for the sake of the game.
In Argentina, there are 12 different leagues in different parts of the country, and the Madrid team will deliver the corresponding clothing to all the participants so that they can continue their sporting work. This event not only takes place in Argentina, but the Foundation also works in X countries throughout the world, including Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Mozambique, Italy and Spain, among others.

The union between Atlético Madrid and Scholas began in 2015, when José María del Corral visited Madrid and together with Román Rodríguez, who today works as treasurer at the Fundación del Colchonero, presented this project to the leadership.
“During one of José María’s trips, he and I visited Atlético de Madrid to tell them about the fantastic work that Scholas was doing around the world,” Rodríguez told exclusively to olé. “We met with Emilio Gutiérrez, who was the general director of the Academy and International Development of the club, who fell in love with the project, and together with Miguel Ángel Gil (owner of Atlético Madrid) decided to join. José María invited them to a meeting with Pope Francis in the Vatican, where presidents of other clubs were also present, and there we began to contribute to this great movement,” he continued.
That was the Vicente Calderón.Since that year, the Colchonero collaborates with Scholas making donations and helping in everything within his reach. Just two years after joining this cause, in 2017 he held an exhibition match to help raise funds for the Foundation. That friendly match, a team made up of mattress legends faced a team of world legends that represented Scholas in what was the last game before the demolition of the Vicente Calderón stadium.

This beneficial link has been very well received by both parties, as it allows them to continue with the goal of integration. “For us, the help from Atlético is beautiful“said Alejandro Guglielmo, coordinator of the Scholas International Soccer League. “This allows us to make known this project that was born from passion and helps us to make ourselves known and allow this program to reach many more people“, he sentenced.
